The Case for Support

In 2007, we served 3,689 clients. Of these 3,689 clients, a total of 739 were heads of families with 261 collaterals/family members who were not officially Harlem United clients. However, some Harlem United services benefited these collaterals/family members, too. Therefore, if we include the 261 collaterals/family members in our count, we served a total of 3,950 unique individuals. This represents a 32% increase over 2006.

In addition, through our HIV education, intervention, and awareness programs, we completed more than 33,000 outreach and education encounters during 2007.

Harlem United offers an invaluable continuum of care for these clients. Our comprehensive menu of services includes: primary care; adult day healthcare; mental health services; prevention, testing and outreach initiatives; and supportive housing programs.

As a community-based organization, Harlem United is also uniquely positioned to maximize the impact on our clients lives. It often takes months—and sometimes years—to stabilize the health of those living with HIV/AIDS who are also afflicted with substance use, mental health problems, domestic violence, homelessness, poverty, social stigma, and patterns of incarceration. We help our clients—whom many other social service agencies cannot serve—to heal themselves physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually.

Finally, Harlem United is a national leader in using evaluation and outcomes assessment to measure the effectiveness of care. Our Evaluation Department collects and analyzes data on a regular basis. Our Quality Management Teams use this data to ensure we are truly connecting our clients to medical care, improving objective indicators of their physical and mental health, and meeting other service goals efficiently.
