Vocational/Educational Program

The Vocational Education Program, located at 289 St. Nicholas Avenue, is funded by a grant from the New York State AIDS Institute. The program is designed to provide clients with free vocational and educational support and training to help them meet their goals and achieve a higher level of functioning and independence. Our services are available to clients from all Harlem United divisions as well as clients from other agencies that serve PLWHA.

Clients are referred to the Vocational Education Program by their case managers, and once accepted, they receive a vocational and educational assessment to determine the appropriate individualized service plan best-suited to address their unique needs and goals.

Our services include (in English and Spanish):

Support

    •Weekly vocational and educational case management/counseling

    •Weekly support groups

    •Entitlements and employability counseling

    •Regular monitoring of health status and treatment adherence

Skills Building

    •Computer training labs

    •Assistance with resume and cover letter writing

    •Job interviewing skills

    •Filling out job applications

    •Coping with barriers to adherence (medical treatment and/or rent payment)

Opportunities

    •Stipend positions in administration and maintenance

    •Job placement and tracking

    •Referrals for G.E.D., ESL, specialized vocational training programs, literacy programs, college
