Harlem United is a community based organization in NYC that provides HIV prevention and treatment services. 100% of your tax-deductible donation goes directly to the organization. Through Francisco's work with HU as an HIV tester, counselor, and community health specialist, I have witnessed the incredible reach and breadth of the services that the agency provides. I am so proud of Francisco and of HU for their commitment to reducing HIV in disenfranchised communities, especially low-income communities of color.
To those who question the need for such services, consider the following statistics about the disproportionate impact of HIV and AIDS on Black and Latino communities:
- African-Americans represent only 13% of the population, but 50% of individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
- AIDS remains the LEADING cause of death for Black women between the ages of 25-34, with the rate of HIV infections among Black women nearly 20 TIMES that of white women.
- AIDS is the fourth leading cause of death for Latinos between the ages of 35-44, with Latina women four times more likely to contract the virus than white women.
The quote in the first image above about gender-based oppression and the AIDS pandemic (which, again, rings especially true for women of color) is one of the primary reasons I chose to run the NYC marathon with Harlem United. The other images also relate to my training and preparation for this event: June 27th - National HIV Testing Day - represents the beginning of my training for the marathon, while October 15th - National Latino AIDS Awareness Day - marks the weekend of my longest run (23 miles) leading up to the full 26-mile race. The final picture was taken at a recent race in Harlem (the "Percy Sutton Harlem 5K Run for the Children of Haiti") with fellow alums from grad school, Dana, Aileen, Vanessa, and Paola. Vanessa (to my left) will be running the NYC marathon with me on November 7th, as will my cousin Kelly, so please cheer for them on the course! A special shout-out also goes to Silvina, my inspirational college running partner, with whom I completed two half-marathons in our younger years :)
