Marathon fundraising page

I have never claimed to be a runner. And, for those who remember my short stint on the Novato High School track team, you know that I was more suited to be the team mascot than a team member. When I couldn't master breathing and running at the same time, I tried the discus. As I recall from Mr. Weckle's stop action photographs, it looked more like the discus was throwing me and not the other way around.

However, good causes such as raising funds for Harlem United Community AIDS Center, have a way of endowing me with powers that nature forgot to code to my DNA.

Remember the story of David and Goliath? Mighty Mouse? Popeye the Sailor Man? When a good cause called out to each of these normally whimpy folks, each somehow found the power and mustered up the strength and courage to saved the day.

Under normal circumstances, I'd be happy just running three miles around my neighborhood park and calling it a day. But when HARLEM UNITED asks me to run 13.1 miles to help to raise funds to make HIV/STD testing accessible; provide quality primary care, mental health care, and housing for people living with or threatened by HIV/AIDS...well, something happens and like Popeye and Mighty Mouse, my chest puffs out (it goes from an A cup to a triple X cup) ; my biceps grow into mountains, my feet grow wings, and I become as fast as a bullet train (in the cartoon version).

In the real life version, I am able to complete the race with all of my body parts, and manage to raise funds to make the world a little bit better for a few more people.

Like Popeye, I need to be fed some green stuff in order to fuel my super powers. Please help by donating a bit of your hard-earned and very useful cash to Harlem United. Your contributions and encouraging words helped me in 2010, let's do it again in 2011.

The State of the Disease

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than one million people are living with HIV in the United States, with an estimated 56,300 Americans becoming infected each year. Although we don't hear about it in the news, more than 18,000 people with AIDS still die each year in the US.
