A Hollander’s reflection on American healthcare and Harlem United

On April 26th, 30 journalism students from Holland, visited Harlem United. This is a guest post from Bastiaan Kah, one of the students, sharing their experience. At a glance 133rd street looks like any other street in Harlem. Four-story brick houses, with steps out front. A/Cs hanging out the windows, usually with bars in front of them, and cars crammed in every available space. But right in the middle a different building stands proud. A glass and steel construction called "The Nest" rises. Named after the jazzclub that used to occupy the space, it now houses the ...

Harlem United awarded two new grants to expand our health care and HIV prevention programs

We have exciting news to share! Harlem United is the recipient of two new exciting and important grant awards, one in our Prevention department (or PESS, which stands for Prevention, Education and Support Services) and one in our Health Services department. In PESS, Harlem United’s application to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for Comprehensive High-Impact HIV Prevention (FOA PS15-1502) was selected for funding! How a quiet change is transforming young LGBT lives

At 4:59 p.m., the community space at HOME—our program for LGBT young adults—is bustling. There’s a group of three young women sitting on the couch talking, one program member is checking his email on the computer, other members go in and out, checking their schedule for the next day and flagging down staff to talk with. But at 5:00 p.m., the space begins to transform. A few weeks ago, we kicked off our partnership with Harlem-based Land Yoga’s new nonprofit arm, Three and a Half Acres, to bring yoga to our LGBT young adult program members each Wednesday ...

What I learned on my trip to Coney Island

Last month, I rode out to Coney Island, in Brooklyn, with Isaac & Pedro, two staff in our Integrated Harm Reduction Program to see their work in action. Nestled right next to the iconic rides on Coney Island’s historic boardwalk is a neighborhood where injection drug use is common. Despite the wind and rain, we park our van and the team sets up shop. Over the course of the day, the team meets with clients who come for new, clean, sterile needles. We give them out for free because using clean needles lowers the risk of HIV and other blood-born infection transmiss...
