Enhanced Harm Reduction Specialist, Prevention

The Enhanced Harm Reduction Specialist is responsible for providing an array of mobile-based harm reduction services to marginalized, street-based populations including people living with HIV, people who actively use and inject drugs, people with Hepatitis C, people who engage in sex work, and other high risk populations. This position provides intakes and ongoing assessments to people living with and at risk for HIV/AIDS, syringe exchange, substance use, pantry bag and sexual risk assessments, referrals, street outreach, and additional responsibilities as requested. Overdose education and relapse prevention is conducted on a regular basis to all clients with a history of substance use. The appropriate candidate will have knowledge of such street-based populations as well as appropriate written communication skills. Candidate also must have knowledge of data tools. Mobile services are conducted utilizing a team approach in the Prevention Division of Harlem United. This position is also responsible for driving the mobile units and assisting with vehicle maintenance. Services are conducted utilizing a harm reduction approach that supports the client in identifying their own goals around substance use and safer sex. While some clients choose abstinence as a goal, others may choose to reduce their use, or to use or engage in sexual practices more safely. We support clients who are actively using, those who use occasionally and those who are in recovery. Our clinical skills are heavily based in the concepts of Motivational Interviewing, which help to facilitate the clients’ exploration of their own motivation to make change. We are continuously assessing clients for their Stage of Change, and match that Stage with an appropriate Motivational Interviewing intervention. While candidates should possess and be ready to offer a plethora of knowledge on safer sex and substance use practices, an understanding for and appreciation of the value of active listening is of critical importance to this work.
