Field Coordinator, Harm Reduction Services

The Field Coordinator is responsible for providing an array of mobile-based harm reduction services to marginalized, street-based populations including people living with HIV, people who actively use and inject drugs, people with Hepatitis C, people who engage in sex work, and other high risk populations. This position provides intakes and ongoing assessments to people living with HIV/AIDS, syringe exchange, substance use and sexual risk assessments, referrals, street outreach and additional responsibilities as requested. The appropriate candidate will have knowledge of such street-based populations as well as appropriate written communication skills. This position is also responsible for driving the mobile units to our various mobile site locations. Mobile services are conducted utilizing a team-based, harm reduction approach that supports the client in identifying his or her own goals around substance use and safer sex. While some clients choose abstinence as a goal, others may choose to reduce their use, or to use or engage in sexual practices more safely. We support clients who are actively using, those who use occasionally and those who are in recovery. Our clinical skills are heavily based in the concepts of Motivational Interviewing, which help to facilitate the clients’ exploration of their own motivation to make change. We are continuously assessing clients for their Stage of Change, and match that Stage with an appropriate Motivational Interviewing intervention. While candidates should possess and be ready to offer a plethora of knowledge on safer sex and substance use practices, an understanding for and appreciation of the value of active listening of critical importance to this work.  Education and Certification: Masters Degree in Social Work/Public Administration/Public Health or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.5-10 years experience in not-for profit service delivery; experienced in NYC HIV service delivery system; a deep knowledge of harm reduction principles; experience working with at risk communities.
