New York, NY — Today Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced a proposal to amend the New York State Constitution to guarantee a woman’s right to choose by codifying the protections established in Roe v. Wade. The amendment would ensure that, regardless of whether Roe is changed or overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, the right to choose would be protected in New York.

“At a time of uncertainty at the federal level, and in states around the country, it is even more important that we protect the right to choose and ensure that every woman in New York has access to reproductive health care,” said Jacquelyn Kilmer, Esq., CEO of Harlem United. “Governor Andrew Cuomo’s historic state constitutional amendment not only will ensure that a woman’s right to choose in New York is protected, but it will also pave the way for other states to follow and declare that we will never go back to the days when women did not have access to safe and affordable reproductive health care.”
